Box Hill was recently voted best crab cakes in Maryland by the public!

This Monday, March 25, was Maryland Day, which pays tribute to the birthday of our great state. To celebrate Maryland Day, it is only right to discuss the famous crab cake, and Megan Knight at WMAR2news created a poll on Facebook for the best place to get a crab cake in the area. Although this poll was unofficial and just for fun, Box Hill is honored to take first place, and we appreciate our loyal customers for voting!

The Results

The poll had about 40 comments from Facebook users, and Box Hill won with the most votes. Tied for second place was Jimmy’s Seafood and those who thought their own crab cakes were the best, and Costas Inn in Dundalk, Pappas, and G&M Restaurant in Linthicum Heights all tied for third place.

How Box Hill Crab Cakes Are Made

At Box Hill, we are always striving to make the best crab cakes possible. We use fresh, blue crabs that arrive at our store every day, and will never use crabs that were caught over 24 hours ago. This is crucial to the process, as a world-famous Box Hill crab cakes are always made with fresh and firm meat. We also have strict rules for size and weight to ensure that every crab cake is full of as much meat as possible!

Next, we season them with a delicious blend of spices, salt, and pepper. Every batch of crabs we steam is timed so the meat will retain the right consistency without giving up its taste. Then it’s time to pick all of the meat from the crabs. Authentic crab cakes should never have any shells, and we take the time to ensure nothing will get in the way between the experience of biting into your flavorful Maryland crab cake.

The next step is to mix the crab meat in with a light filling to hold it together. As Marylanders know, a crab cake should be mainly made of crab meat, and we use just enough filling to keep the cake together. The filling is flavored with herbs and spices to boost the flavor, but never mask the taste of the fresh crab.

Then it’s time to shape the mixture into a hefty crab cake- after all, a Maryland crab cake should be a meal in itself! The uncooked crab cakes are placed in a climate-controlled refrigerator to hold its consistency until they are ready to be broiled or fried for our customers.
