Fact or Fiction? Common Seafood Myths vs. The Truth

Don’t let an old myth keep you from enjoying a delightful seafood dinner!

Seafood is a delicious and nutritious delight that many of us simply aren’t eating often enough. Doctors recommend approximately two servings of seafood a week, but most Americans eat one or less. Why aren’t we eating enough seafood? It’s likely that many of the misconceptions surrounding this nutritious food group have scared some people away. Let’s go through a few of the many myths that surround seafood.

Seafood Has High Mercury Levels

While this commonly known piece of fiction holds a grain of truth, in general seafood holds little to no mercury threats. Young children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers may need to ask their doctors, but often the benefits of seafood well outweigh the low risk. Fish is full of omega-3 fatty acids, and tons of vitamins and minerals while still being low in caloric density.

Mahi Mahi is Dolphin

This tasty type of fish comes from the tropics and is also known as the dolphinfish which has caused some confusion. Dolphinfish and the mammal dolphins are two very different things. Dolphins are protected by law in Canada and the US and can not be served as food.

Milk and Shellfish Shouldn’t Go Together

Due to some religious beliefs, there is a myth that shellfish and dairy can cause illness if mixed together. This is just not true. While respecting religious tradition is important, if you’ve latched onto this myth on accident, it’s time to let it go. The combination of shellfish and dairy products is delicious! Take a seafood pizza or lobster bisque, for example, both are wonderful examples of milk and dairy mixing with shellfish.

Jumbo Shrimp Are All The Same Size

Because of the way shrimp is labeled, the term “jumbo” shrimp is one that is hard to define. The seafood industry doesn’t regulate terms like jumbo, large, medium, or small; instead, they regulate by the number of shrimp per pound. Depending on where you are, and the seafood market in your area, the size of shrimp, referred to as “jumbo” may vary.
