The Chesapeake Bay is Heating Up

Chesapeake Bay Water Temperature

According to the studies of two United States Geological Survey hydrologists, the waters of the Chesapeake Bay are on the rise, which could mean trouble down the road. Since the 1960’s, the waters of the bay appear to be at least two degrees higher. While this slight change may not seem serious, the gradual warming of the waters, including the streams and rivers that lead into the bay, could cause a number of events to occur that could spell out bad news for the Chesapeake Bay.

As the water warms, the nutrient phosphorus begins to rise from the sediment more rapidly, which creates dead zones throughout the Chesapeake Bay. These dead zones are without any type of oxygen in the water, making it impossible for fish or vegetation to survive. The increase in phosphorus along with the ongoing problem of pollution could set back any attempts to successfully clean the Chesapeake Bay.

Another issue for the Chesapeake Bay that could arise from the changing temperatures is the fish population and migration routes. Fish species that typically avoid the Chesapeake Bay because of its cooler temperatures could begin to enter the waters now that temperatures are rising, causing problems for other Chesapeake Bay species. The warming temperatures could also mean young fish and fish eggs of some species would be unable to survive.

At Box Hill, we continue to bring our loyal customers delicious Maryland Crab Cakes to enjoy throughout the year. We remain positive that the Chesapeake Bay will bounce back from the obstacles it continues to face and we can continue to serve only the highest quality crab cakes.
