Crab Moratorium: Yes or No Maryland?

Crab Moratorium

Maryland is known for many things and our residents take pride in our reputation. One of the main things Maryland residents are most proud of is our supply of the Maryland Blue Crab. Within the past decade, the population of Maryland blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay has seen its ups and downs. Currently, the crab population is reaching a scary low, making residents nervous about the future of their crabs. It has gotten to the point that a crab moratorium should be in place.

After a dredge survey, the total female spawning population only reached a level of 70 million. This may seem like a big number to those who live out of our state, but compare that number to the original level goal, 215 million. It is clear to many residents that the crab population is reaching low levels that could possibly be impossible to bounce back from. A yearlong crab moratorium has been suggested, but some residents didn’t agree with the idea. However, after a recent poll held by Goucher College, it would appear that more residents actually would face a year without crabs if it meant saving the overall population. About 62 percent of residents polled are supporting the crab moratorium, with 85 percent of residents showing concern about the overall pollution within the bay. While this poll shows the support of residents, there is still doubt about how successful the crab moratorium would actually be if put in place.

At Box Hill, we pride ourselves on using only Maryland blue crab meat to make our famous Maryland crab cakes. For over 25 years we have striven to supply residents with only the best crab cakes, and our reputation speaks for itself. We have seen the highs and lows of the Maryland Blue Crab and will continue to use only the best crab meat for our crab cakes while not jeopardizing the crab species that we as a state hold dear to our hearts.
