Crab Season Begins in Maryland

After a long winter, the season Marylanders have been waiting for is finally here. No, not spring (well yes, spring) but more importantly, crab season. Crab season began on March 31st, which means crabbing is once again permitted on the Chesapeake Bay.

However, the exceptionally long and cold winter we had may have been tough on our crustacean friends. The Chesapeake Bay iced over several times this winter, which could result in increased crab mortality rates. And though crab season has started, the crabs themselves might still be buried in the mud, waiting until the water warms up to begin their search for food. Crabs generally prefer water temperatures in the low 50s, but right now temperatures are still hovering in the low 40s throughout the Bay region. But once, those water temperatures rise, blue crabs will start looking for food again and making their way back up the Bay. Official estimates for the crab population in Bay will be released in mid to late April.

While crab season may have officially just started, don’t forget that it’s always crab season here at Box Hill. Come on by for one of our perfectly seasoned crab cakes today!
