Learn how Box Hill crab cakes are made!

At Box Hill, we are famous for our crab cakes- but have you ever wondered about the process that it takes to make a crab cake from start to finish? Unlike other restaurants that purchase crab meat from large distributors, all of our crab cakes are made with freshly caught blue crabs. Continue reading to learn all about how Box Hill crab cakes are made!

East Coast Blue Crabs

Box Hill crab cakes start as blue crabs, which are known for their flavorful meat. The crabbers work along the east coast and bring in fresh, healthy blue crabs, and they are made into crab cakes within 24 hours of being caught. We pride ourselves on only buying the freshest crabs from local businesses, as it not only helps the economy but also ensures that we use the highest quality meat for our customers. Some restaurants save money by purchasing crab meat from national processors, but we are passionate about making the most authentic, delicious crab cakes possible.

Crab Meat

Once we receive the blue crabs and they are the appropriate size and weight, we season them with a blend of spices, salt, and pepper. Each batch is steamed so the meat stays at the ideal consistency while maintaining its taste. Then, our experienced workers carefully pick them to ensure the shell is completely removed. This process can be time-consuming, but it is one of the most important steps, as we don’t want any shells to get in the way of a customer enjoying their flavorful crab cake!

After all the meat is removed, the next step is to mix it with a light filling to hold it together. Many restaurants use too much filler and not enough crab meat, but at Box Hill, we use as much meat as possible! The filling is flavored with plenty of herbs and spices to help the overall flavor and texture of the crab cake without overpowering the authentic taste.

Cooking Process

We believe that a crab cake should be a full meal, so the next step is to shape the concoction into eight-ounce cakes. They are then placed in a climate-controlled fridge, which helps the cake bind together and hold its consistency. Finally, it’s time to cook the crab cakes! Many of our customers prefer fried crab cakes, but we also offer broiled cakes. We also ship fresh crab cakes all over the U.S., so you can cook them at home for the perfect meal!
