Things are Heating Up for the Chesapeake Bay

Chesapeake-BayA recent study published through the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science is showing evidence that different portions of the Chesapeake Bay are becoming warmer. Not only are these portions warming more than other areas of the bay, but they are also warming more rapidly than the air temperature.

Not only do these findings show that climate change is becoming an issue, it is also showing an obstacle remaining steady for the bay. An increase in water temperature means that these areas will be more vulnerable to serious algae blooms, which can lead to dead zones. A dead zone is an area of the bay that has been denied oxygen and sunlight due to the algae at the surface, cutting off potential life down below. If these dead zones remain steady, the life forms within the Chesapeake Bay like the Maryland Blue Crab, will suffer. This increase in water temperature can also lead to premature spawning in some animals, which could negatively affect population.

While the study is showing that urbanization surrounding the Chesapeake Bay has been a factor in the increase in water temperature, it is important to always do your part in protecting the bay and the creatures that it holds.

Box Hill remains confident that the Chesapeake Bay will be able to make a comeback and still remain the home of the Maryland Blue Crab. As long as the crabs are plentiful, we will continue to provide our customers with delicious crab cakes using the Blue Crab meat we know and love.
