Remember a few weeks ago when we got ourselves all excited for blue crab season? Well the season is just about upon us now, and a recent study from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has some great news. Their annual winter dredge indicated a Chesapeake Bay blue crab population upwards of 553 million! That’s a 35% increase over last year and the fourth highest level in twenty years! Needless to say, we’re pretty excited to make a whole bunch of crab cakes during this blue crab season.

According to the results of the winter dredge, there are a few different factors that will contribute to this awesomely fruitful blue crab season. The spawning female population nearly doubled — from 101 million to 194 million — and the adult males more than doubled — from 44 million to 91 million. That’s a lot of crabs. Fisheries Service Director Dave Blazer indicated that a milder winter, favorable currents and tides, and excellent bay-wide management measures all contributed to a rebounding blue crab population. This year’s report follows the trend of last year’s, which showed a 38% boost from the previous year.
