Be sure to order crab cakes for the upcoming Lenten season!

Lent is a season of 40 days, not counting Sundays, and this year’s Lenten season begins on March 6th (Ash Wednesday) and ends on April 18th (Holy Thursday.) During this time, Catholics abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent. However, seafood and fish are allowed, so you may see restaurants advertise their seafood or non-meat menu items more than usual. Box Hill always serves the freshest seafood, and our world-famous crab cakes can be ordered online and shipped right to your door for the perfect Friday meal!

What is Lent?

Lent is a time of repentance, fasting, and preparation for the Easter holiday. In the Catholic religion, it is a time for self-examination and reflection, and to give up something or to give back to others by donating money, goods, or acts of charity.

There are a few important days during Lent, starting with Ash Wednesday. This day marks the start of Lent and is an obligatory day of fasting (ages 18-59) and abstinence from meat (ages 14+.) Fasting doesn’t necessarily mean eating no food, but rather eating less than normal. For example, it’s acceptable to eat one normal, full-sized meal, or two smaller meals. On all Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence from meat, but once again, seafood is allowed. On Easter Sunday, Lent has ended, and it is time for celebration and to feast.

Why No Meat?

Meatless Fridays are an important part of Lent, but you may be curious as to why meat is banned. Meat was singled out because it is associated with celebrations and feasts, as most holidays revolve around a meat entree. Friday is seen as a day to commemorate the Passion and death of Jesus, and it was thought that a day devoted to remembering Christ shouldn’t be a day to feast. As for seafood, fish never had the same status as the flesh or mammals or birds and isn’t typically associated with celebrations, so it is not an obligation to abstain from fish.
