The Best Maryland Wines To Pair With Crab Cakes

Take a look at our suggestions for Maryland wines to pair with our famous crab cakes.

Last week we shared our choices for the best beer to pair with Box Hill crab cakes, but sometimes we’d rather have a glass of wine with our meal instead. Wine and crab cakes are also a great pair, and Maryland vineyards have many delicious wines that are the perfect accompaniment to our famous crab cakes.

What To Look For

When deciding what wine to drink, look for medium-bodied whites or sparkling wine that are relatively crisp and have plenty of acid and notes of citrus. Wines that are described as oaky, buttery or rich should be crossed off your list, as those white wines pair better with lobster. Also, you will generally want to avoid wines that are too sweet or sugary, as something light will better complement the flavors in the crab cake without overpowering them.

Our Picks

  • Chardonnay: Harford Vineyard

Chardonnay is a classic crab cake pairing, and Hartford Vineyard’s 2016 Chardonnay is no different. The fresh, crisp character of this wine makes it a go-to wine with any seafood and is perfect to enjoy on the last few cool summer nights before the season ends.

  • Vidal Blanc: Knob Hall Winery

Knob Hall Winery’s Vidal Blanc has been called “the ultimate wine for seafood,” and is a great companion for Box Hill crab cakes. The wine is light and dry and tastes like a lovely mix of citrus and melon.

  • Viognier: Catoctin Breeze Vineyard

The 2015 Viognier from Catoctin Breeze Vineyard pairs perfectly with shellfish, as well as heavily seasoned or spicy dishes, so if you prefer a heavily seasoned crab cake, this is the wine for you. The wine displays a soft acidity and faint sweetness with a fresh flavor of peach, hints of grapefruit, and a short, light finish.

  • Pinot Grigio: Fiore Winery & Distillery

The Fiore Pinot Grigio was made similarly to the traditional “Italian” style of the wine, which is lighter in body and refreshingly crisp. This wine is fruity, with flavors of pear, apple, and hints of peach which blend beautifully with the subtle aromas of lemon-citrus and coconut.

  • New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc: Olney Winery

If you prefer your crab with some spice or fruity dipping sauce, Olney Winery’s New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is a great pair. This wine is crisp with mild fruit notes and works well paired with Asian-inspired crab cakes.
